Current SYMF Materials for 2019


  • All categories that had a maximum age limit of 18 years old have been changed to 19 years old.



  • Piano Qualified Baroque Categories: Bach Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, BWV 903 is NOT allowed.
  • NO piano duo/duets are allowed in Duet (D), Ensemble Qualified (En Q), and/or Ensemble Open (En O) Categories.
  • Piano Open Duet (P OD) Categories: music for 2, 4, 6, or 8 hands is accepted.
  • Young Pianists Categories 3 and 4: The Grieg piano concerto has been added (as of 2015).
  • Please be reminded that students entered in the Young Pianists categories need only audition with the concerto/work to be performed with the orchestra.
  • Note that there is an omission (some of the early printings of the Rules Booklet have this error) in the Piano Qualified Repertoire Booklet, page 5: Category 10 should be “Masterwork Classics, Level 3."


  • The collection “World’s Favorite Series 93” that is used in Violin Qualifed Solo Categories 4 to 9, 14, 23 is out of print. If you do not have the book, you may use a photocopy. Please bring your photocoy to the TAB ROOM on the day of the competition for us to OK its use for the judges.
  • We will NOT allow any arrangements that modifies the original violin part, such as the arrangement of the Divertimento by Steibelt by M. A. Caux.

Violin & Viola

  • Violinists and Violists compete together in the Young Violinists/Violists Categories.
